I have two RL01 cartridges that were installed in a MINC system.
The two cartridges are marked on handwritten labels as “26b” and “27” respectively. Cartridge 27 also has an original DEC label on it. The DEC label says “AX-J913D-BC” and “RT-11/FEP MINC V2.2 BIN RL1”. Cartridge 26b does not have any original DEC label on it.

When booted on my PDP-11/73 (in a BA123 cabinet) with the WRITE PROT switch activated, I get the following dialog.
.BOOT DL0: RT-11/FEP V2.2 ?IND-F-Swap error Device write error .
The imaging process
Here is the process that I followed to image these RL01 cartridges…
Load the RL01 cartridge in an RL01 drive connected to my PDP-11/73. This machine is in a BA123 cabinet and boots into RT-11SB (S) V05.07, via a SCSI2SD drive. The WRITE PROT button on the RL01 drive is pressed in, to ensure the cartridge does not get overwritten accidentally.
The PDP-11/73 has access to a virtual TU58 drive running on my MSDOS PC. This occurs by way of a TU58 emulator (“Will’s Works RT11 DD Radial Serial Protocol Server Version 1.03”). On the MSDOS machine, I create a copy of my standard TU58 boot cassette (called rtv5rl.dsk) and I name the copy as “minc.t58”.
I then start the TU58 emulator with the command “tu58 -rrtv5rl.dsk minc.t58”. Note that the file “tu58.ini” is already configured to specify the COM port and baud rate in use on the MSDOS machine.
From the PDP-11/73 console, I should now be able to do a “DIR DD0:” and “DIR DD1:”. Both directories should be identical at present, as DD1 is a copy of DD0.
I then initialize the DD1: TU58 image by using the following commands:
UNPROT/SYS DD1:*.* DELETE/SYS/NOQUERY DD1:*.*
Now I copy the files from the RL01 cartridge to the TU58 virtual drive:
COPY/SYS DL0:*.* DD1:
I then do a “DIR DL0:” and “DIR DD1:” to check that the number of files and blocks is the same on both the source and destination drives.
Now remove the RL01 cartridge and put it away safely. Power down the PDP-11/73.
I then transfer the “minc.t58” file from the MSDOS PC to my Windows laptop using FTP. It will appear under Windows as “MINC.T58”. The FTP client software running on the MSDOS machine is mTCP FtpSrv by M Brutman Version 23 May 2013. I run FileZilla on the Windows laptop to pull the file across to the laptop.
Then configure SIMH V4.0.0 on the Windows laptop with the following script:
set cpu 256k set cpu 11/23 set rl enable set rl0 rl02 set rl1 rl01 attach rl0 working.dsk attach rl1 minc.dsk set rq0 rd54 attach rq0 -r minc.t58 set tti 8b set tto 8b ; Setup PUTTY to start up and connect to the PDP-11 automatically set console telnet=2222 ! start /b cmd /c ""putty" "telnet://127.0.0.1:2222/"" boot rl0
The virtual disk file “working.dsk” is my existing RT11-FB V05.03 RL02 boot cartridge.
Start SIMH. You will get a message saying something like “RL: creating new file” and “Overwrite last track? [N]”. Press “y” and Enter.
RT-11 will startup. You should be able to see your TU58 image (using “DIR DU0:”). The number of files and blocks should match what you saw previously on the PDP-11/73.
Initialise the new RL01 disk image using the following command:
INIT/BADBLOCKS DL1:
Using the command “DIR DL1:” you should now see a blank RL01 cartridge:
.dir dl1: 0 Files, 0 Blocks 10172 Free blocks .
Now copy all the files from the TU58 image to the RL01 image:
COPY/SYS DU0:*.* DL1:
NOTE: When copying the files for “27” cartridge, I received the following error when about 80% through the copying process:
?PIP-F-Directory full DL1:SNDBUG.FOR .
The following additional commands were then required to complete the COPY operation:
.SQUEEZE Device? DL1: DL1:/Squeeze; Are you sure? Y .COPY/SYS/NOQUERY DU0:*.* DL1:
Use the command “DIR DL1:” to verify the image has the correct number of files and blocks.
Our RL01 image (currently mounted as DL1:) needs to be updated using the COPY/BOOT command. For example I know that my real RL01 cartridge marked “26b” boots into RT-11FB V05.01. So I use the following command in SIMH:
COPY/BOOT:DL DL1:RT11FB.SYS DL1:
For the “27” cartridge, I couldn’t see the usual RT-11 monitor files. Here is a list of all the .SYS files on the cartridge:
.DIR DL1:*.SYS SWAP .SYS 25P 07-Mar-83 FEPRT .SYS 57P 07-Mar-83 NL .SYS 2P 07-Mar-83 TT .SYS 2P 07-Mar-83 DY .SYS 4P 07-Mar-83 DL .SYS 4P 07-Mar-83 IBMNC .SYS 10P 27-Mar-82 IBXMNC.SYS 11P 27-Mar-82 IBNMNC.SYS 10P 27-Mar-82 IBXNMC.SYS 11P 27-Mar-82 10 Files, 136 Blocks 4328 Free blocks .
Looking at the above list, I took a guess that the correct monitor is “FEPRT.SYS”. I installed it using the COPY/BOOT command as follows and it now boots up with the same messages as I get with the real physical RL01 cartridge:
COPY/BOOT:DL DL1:FEPRT.SYS DL1:
OK, all done. To protect our new image (minc.dsk) against accidental overwrites, change the SIMH.INI attach line to say:
attach rl1 -r minc.dsk
After restarting SIMH, you should now be able to use the following command in SIMH to boot the MINC RL01 disk image:
BOOT DL1:
